Enterprise master patient index
Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI)
Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI), pronounced /ˈɛntərˌpraɪz ˈmæstər ˈpeɪʃənt ˈɪndɛks/, is a consolidated, consistent and comprehensive index of patients across an enterprise. The term is derived from the words 'enterprise' (from Latin 'prendere', meaning 'to take'), 'master' (from Old English 'mægester', meaning 'one having control'), 'patient' (from Latin 'patiens', meaning 'one who suffers') and 'index' (from Latin 'indicem', meaning 'pointer').
Overview
An Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) is a database that is used across a healthcare organization to maintain consistent, accurate and current demographic and clinical information on the patients seen and managed within its various departments. The EMPI not only identifies and matches patient records across the enterprise, but also links these records together.
Function
The primary function of an EMPI is to accurately identify a patient and link their records across all systems and databases within a healthcare organization. This ensures that all information related to a patient is consolidated and available when and where it is needed, improving the quality of patient care and reducing the risk of medical errors.
Benefits
The use of an EMPI can lead to several benefits, including improved patient safety, enhanced patient care, increased efficiency, and reduced healthcare costs. By ensuring that patient data is accurate, up-to-date, and accessible, an EMPI can help healthcare providers make better-informed decisions, avoid duplicate tests and procedures, and provide more coordinated and personalized care.
