Enteral Feeding

Enteral feeding (pronunciation: /ɛnˈtɛrəl ˈfiːdɪŋ/) is a method of supplying nutrients directly into the gastrointestinal tract. This method is often used when a patient is unable to eat normally due to various health conditions.

Etymology

The term "enteral" comes from the Greek word "enteron" which means intestine, and "feeding" is derived from the Old English "fēdan", which means to nourish.

Method

Enteral feeding is typically administered through a feeding tube that is inserted into the stomach or small intestine. The nutrients provided through enteral feeding are usually in the form of a special diet prepared specifically for tube feeding. It can be given as a continuous feed, bolus feed, or a combination of both.
