Englewood is a city located in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. It is part of the New York metropolitan area, and is situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) north of Manhattan. Englewood was incorporated as a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 17, 1899, from portions of Ridgefield Township.

History

Englewood's history dates back to 1647 when the area was first settled by Europeans. The city was originally a part of Hackensack Township, but was incorporated as a separate entity in 1899. Englewood's growth was spurred by the construction of the Northern Railroad of New Jersey, which provided easy access to New York City.

Geography

Englewood is located on the western slope of the Palisades, providing scenic views of the Hudson River and the New York City skyline. The city covers an area of 4.937 square miles (12.788 km²), of which 4.914 square miles (12.729 km²) is land and 0.023 square miles (0.059 km²) is water.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 27,147 people residing in Englewood. The city has a diverse population, with a large number of residents being of African American, Hispanic, and Asian descent.

Economy

Englewood's economy is diverse, with a mix of retail, healthcare, professional services, and manufacturing businesses. The city is home to the headquarters of several notable companies, including CNBC, Unilever, and LG Electronics.

Education

Englewood has a strong education system, with the Englewood Public School District serving students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The city is also home to Dwight-Englewood School, a private, coeducational college-preparatory day school.

Transportation

Englewood is served by several major roads, including Interstate 95, U.S. Route 9, and New Jersey Route 4. The city also has a station on the New Jersey Transit Pascack Valley Line.

Numerous notable individuals have hailed from Englewood, including singer Regina Belle, actor John Travolta, and former United States Secretary of State George P. Shultz.
