The England national football team represents England in international football and is controlled by The Football Association (FA), the governing body for football in England. The team competes in major international tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship.
History
The England national football team is one of the oldest national teams in the world, having played its first official match against Scotland on 30 November 1872. The match, held at the Hamilton Crescent in Partick, ended in a 0-0 draw.
Achievements
The team's most significant achievement came in 1966 when they won the 1966 FIFA World Cup, which was held in England. The final was played at Wembley Stadium in London, where England defeated West Germany 4-2 after extra time. Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick in the final, becoming the only player to do so in a World Cup final.
Home Stadium
The England national football team plays its home matches at Wembley Stadium, which is located in Wembley, London. The original Wembley Stadium, often referred to as the "Empire Stadium," was opened in 1923 and was demolished in 2003. The new Wembley Stadium was opened in 2007 and has a seating capacity of 90,000.
Management and Coaching
The team is currently managed by Gareth Southgate, who took over the role in 2016. Southgate, a former England international, has led the team to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the final of the UEFA Euro 2020.
