Endre Czeizel

Endre Czeizel (February 20, 1935 – September 10, 2015) was a prominent Hungarian geneticist, physician, and public health specialist, renowned for his research in human genetics, particularly in the field of congenital abnormalities and teratology. His work significantly contributed to the understanding of the genetic and environmental factors involved in birth defects, leading to the development of preventive measures and treatments that have saved countless lives around the world.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Endre Czeizel was born in Budapest, Hungary. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in the sciences, which led him to pursue a career in medicine. He graduated from the Semmelweis University in Budapest, where he specialized in pediatrics and later in medical genetics, a field that was still in its infancy at the time.
Career[edit]
Czeizel's career was marked by his dedication to understanding the causes of congenital abnormalities and finding ways to prevent them. He worked at the National Institute of Hygiene in Budapest, where he established the Department of Human Genetics, one of the first of its kind in Hungary. His research focused on the epidemiology of congenital abnormalities, the effects of teratogenic agents, and the importance of folic acid in preventing neural tube defects (NTDs) such as spina bifida.
One of Czeizel's most significant contributions was his pioneering study on the preventive effects of folic acid supplementation before conception and during early pregnancy. His research provided strong evidence that taking folic acid can significantly reduce the risk of neural tube defects, leading to the widespread recommendation of folic acid supplementation for women of childbearing age.
Legacy[edit]
Endre Czeizel's work has had a profound impact on the field of medical genetics and public health. His research on folic acid and congenital abnormalities has led to the implementation of folic acid fortification programs in many countries, significantly reducing the incidence of neural tube defects. He authored and co-authored numerous scientific articles and books, sharing his knowledge and research findings with the global scientific community.
Czeizel received several awards and honors for his contributions to genetics and public health, including recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health organizations. His legacy continues to influence the fields of genetics, teratology, and public health, inspiring new generations of researchers and healthcare professionals.
Death[edit]
Endre Czeizel passed away on September 10, 2015, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking research and contributions to the prevention of congenital abnormalities. His work continues to save lives and improve the health of newborns around the world.
