Employment Medical Advisory Service

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Employment Medical Advisory Service (EMAS) is a public health service that provides medical advice and support to employers and employees in the United Kingdom. It is a part of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the UK's national regulator for workplace health and safety.

History

The Employment Medical Advisory Service was established in 1974, following the enactment of the Health and Safety at Work Act. The service was created to provide expert medical advice to the HSE, employers, and employees on matters related to occupational health.

Role and Functions

The primary role of EMAS is to provide expert medical advice on occupational health matters. This includes advising on the health risks associated with different types of work, the management of occupational health conditions, and the promotion of good health in the workplace.

EMAS also plays a key role in the development and implementation of occupational health policy in the UK. It works closely with other parts of the HSE, as well as with other government departments, professional bodies, and stakeholders, to develop and implement policies and strategies aimed at improving health in the workplace.

Services

EMAS provides a range of services to employers and employees. These include:

  • Providing advice on the health risks associated with different types of work
  • Advising on the management of occupational health conditions
  • Promoting good health in the workplace
  • Developing and implementing occupational health policy
