Embed (ĕm-bĕd')

Embed is a term used in the medical field, particularly in pathology and histology, to describe the process of enclosing or trapping a sample, such as a tissue, in a firm medium like paraffin wax or resin. This is done to facilitate thin sectioning for microscopic examination.

Etymology

The term "embed" originates from the Old English word "inbeddian", which means to plant or implant in a surrounding mass. In the medical context, it refers to the process of preparing tissue samples for microscopic examination.

Procedure

The process of embedding involves several steps. First, the tissue sample is fixed to preserve its structure. It is then dehydrated, usually with alcohol, to remove water. The sample is then cleared, which involves replacing the alcohol with a substance that is miscible with both alcohol and the embedding medium. Finally, the sample is infiltrated with the embedding medium and hardened.

Related Terms

  • Histology: The study of the microscopic structure of tissues.
  • Pathology: The study of disease, its causes, processes, development, and consequences.
  • Paraffin: A type of wax commonly used as an embedding medium.
  • Resin: A type of plastic often used as an embedding medium for electron microscopy.
  • Microscopy: The technical field of using microscopes to view objects and areas of objects that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
