Ella Lingens
Ella Lingens (6 November 1908 – 30 December 2002) was an Austrian physician and Holocaust survivor. She is recognized for her efforts to save Jews during the Holocaust and has been honored as one of the Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
Early Life
Ella Lingens was born in Vienna, Austria, on 6 November 1908. She pursued her education in law and medicine, eventually becoming a physician. Lingens was deeply influenced by her Catholic upbringing and her strong sense of justice, which later played a significant role in her actions during the Second World War.
World War II and the Holocaust
During the Second World War, Lingens, along with her husband, Kurt Lingens, became involved in the resistance against the Nazi regime. They provided shelter and assistance to Jews who were being persecuted. Their activities included hiding Jews in their home and helping them to escape from Nazi-occupied territories.
In 1942, Ella and Kurt Lingens were arrested by the Gestapo for their involvement in aiding Jews. Ella was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where she worked as a camp doctor. Despite the harsh conditions and the constant threat to her own life, she continued to help fellow prisoners, providing medical care and moral support.
Post-War Life
After the war, Ella Lingens returned to Vienna and resumed her medical career. She also became an active speaker and writer, sharing her experiences and advocating for Holocaust education. Her memoirs and testimonies have been valuable contributions to the historical record of the Holocaust.
Recognition and Honors
In recognition of her bravery and humanitarian efforts, Ella Lingens was honored as one of the Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in 1980. This title is awarded to non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. Her story is also featured in various Holocaust memorials and educational programs.
Legacy
Ella Lingens' legacy continues to inspire many. Her courage and compassion in the face of unimaginable adversity serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have in the fight against injustice and hatred.
