Elizabethkingia endophytica
Species of bacterium
Elizabethkingia endophytica is a species of bacteria within the genus Elizabethkingia. It is part of the family Weeksellaceae, which belongs to the class Flavobacteriia in the phylum Bacteroidota. This bacterium was first described in 2015 by Kämpfer and colleagues.
Description
Elizabethkingia endophytica is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium. It is non-motile and does not form spores. The cells are typically found in pairs or short chains. This species is characterized by its ability to survive in various environments, including plant tissues, where it acts as an endophyte.
Habitat
Elizabethkingia endophytica has been isolated from the roots of the plant Zea mays (corn). As an endophytic bacterium, it resides within the plant tissues without causing apparent harm to its host. The ecological role of E. endophytica in plant tissues is not fully understood, but it is believed to contribute to the plant's health by promoting growth or providing resistance to pathogens.
Significance
The genus Elizabethkingia is known for containing species that can be opportunistic pathogens in humans, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. However, Elizabethkingia endophytica has not been associated with human infections. Its primary significance lies in its potential role in agriculture and biotechnology, where endophytic bacteria are studied for their ability to enhance plant growth and resilience.
Research
Research on Elizabethkingia endophytica is ongoing to better understand its interactions with plant hosts and its potential applications in agriculture. Studies focus on its genetic makeup, metabolic capabilities, and the mechanisms by which it interacts with plant tissues.
