Pronunciation

Electronic Data Capture: /ɪˌlɛkˈtrɒnɪk ˈdeɪtə ˈkæptʃər/

Etymology

The term "Electronic Data Capture" is derived from the English language. "Electronic" comes from the word "electron", which was coined by the Irish physicist George Johnstone Stoney in 1891, from "electric" and the Greek suffix "-on". "Data" is a plural of "datum", a Latin word meaning "something given". "Capture" comes from the Latin "captura", meaning "a catching or seizing".

Definition

Electronic Data Capture (EDC) systems are used to collect, store and manage data generated from clinical trials. These systems can be web-based or installed locally. EDC replaces the traditional paper-based data collection, enabling streamlined data collection and expedited time to market for drugs and medical devices.
