Electric Vehicle

An Electric Vehicle (pronounced: /ɪˈlɛktrɪk ˈviːɪkəl/), often abbreviated as EV, is a vehicle that uses one or more electric motors for propulsion. The term "Electric Vehicle" is commonly used to refer to three main types of automotive drivetrains. These are Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), Hybrid-Electric Vehicle (HEV), and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV).

Etymology

The term "Electric Vehicle" is derived from the English words "electric" and "vehicle". The word "electric" is derived from the Greek word "ēlektron", meaning amber, and the word "vehicle" comes from the Latin word "vehiculum", meaning a means of transport.

Types of Electric Vehicles

  • Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV): A BEV uses chemical energy stored in rechargeable battery packs. BEVs use electric motors and motor controllers instead of internal combustion engines for propulsion.
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): An HEV is a type of hybrid vehicle that combines a conventional internal combustion engine system with an electric propulsion system.
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV): A PHEV is a hybrid electric vehicle whose battery can be recharged by plugging it into an external source of electric power, as well by its on-board engine and generator.

Related Terms

  • Electric Motor: An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
  • Internal Combustion Engine: An internal combustion engine (ICE) is a heat engine where the combustion of a fuel occurs with an oxidizer in a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit.
  • Rechargeable Battery: A rechargeable battery, also known as a storage battery, is a type of electrical battery which can be charged, discharged into a load, and recharged many times.
  • Motor Controller: A motor controller is a device or group of devices that serves to govern in some predetermined manner the performance of an electric motor.
