The Electra complex is a term coined by Carl Gustav Jung to describe a girl's psychosexual competition with her mother for possession of her father. It is a counterpart to Sigmund Freud's concept of the Oedipus complex.

Etymology
The term was named after the Greek mythological character Electra, who plotted the death of her mother, Clytemnestra, to avenge the murder of her father, Agamemnon.

The Electra complex is a psychoanalytic term that describes a girl's feelings of rivalry with her mother for the affection and attention of her father. This complex is said to occur during the phallic stage of a girl's psychosexual development.
