Efficiency of food conversion
Efficiency of Food Conversion
Efficiency of food conversion (pronunciation: /ɪˈfɪʃənsi ɒv fuːd kənˈvɜːʃən/), also known as Feed conversion ratio or Feed conversion efficiency, is a measure of an animal's efficiency in converting feed mass into increased body mass.
Etymology
The term "Efficiency of food conversion" is derived from the English words "efficiency", "food", and "conversion". "Efficiency" comes from the Latin word "efficientia" meaning "accomplishment, performance", "food" comes from the Old English "fōda", and "conversion" comes from the Latin "conversionem" meaning "a turning around".
Definition
Efficiency of food conversion is typically calculated as the mass of the food consumed divided by the gain in body mass. For instance, if an animal eats 10 kg of food and gains 1 kg of body mass, its efficiency of food conversion is 10. Lower values indicate more efficient conversion of food into body mass.

- Feed efficiency: Another term for efficiency of food conversion. It is the reciprocal of the feed conversion ratio.
- Gross feed efficiency: The total amount of feed intake divided by the total weight gain.
- Net feed efficiency: The residual feed intake, which is the difference between actual and expected feed intake based on maintenance and growth or milk production.
- Metabolizable energy: The amount of energy that is available to the body from the diet, after subtracting the energy lost in the feces, urine, and gases.
