Education in India
Education in India (pronunciation: /ˌɛdʒʊˈkeɪʃən ɪn ˈɪndiə/) is a sector of significant importance and is governed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The etymology of the term 'education' is derived from the Latin word 'educatio' meaning "a breeding, a bringing up, a rearing".
History
The history of education in India can be traced back to the ancient Vedic period, where education was imparted orally. The Gurukul system was prevalent during this period. The British Raj introduced the modern system of education in India.
Structure
The structure of education in India is divided into different levels such as pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher education. Each level has its own set of governing bodies and institutions like Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), and University Grants Commission (UGC).
Challenges
Despite significant progress, the education sector in India faces several challenges such as lack of infrastructure, inadequate funding, and quality of education. The Right to Education Act was enacted to address some of these issues.
