Eastern Colored League
Eastern Colored League
The Eastern Colored League (ECL) was a professional Negro league baseball organization that operated in the eastern United States from 1923 to 1928. It was one of the prominent leagues for African American baseball teams during the era of racial segregation in the United States.
Formation and History
The Eastern Colored League was founded in 1923 by a group of team owners who sought to create a competitive league for African American players. The league was established as a counterpart to the Negro National League, which was based in the Midwest. The ECL provided a platform for some of the most talented African American baseball players of the time.
The league initially consisted of six teams, including the Hilldale Club, the Baltimore Black Sox, and the Cuban Stars (East). Over the years, the league expanded and contracted, with various teams joining and leaving the league.
Teams
The Eastern Colored League featured several notable teams, including:
- Hilldale Club
- Baltimore Black Sox
- Cuban Stars (East)
- Bacharach Giants
- Lincoln Giants

These teams were known for their competitive play and for showcasing some of the best talent in Negro league baseball.
Notable Players
The ECL was home to many legendary players who made significant contributions to the game of baseball. Some of the notable players included:
These players were celebrated for their exceptional skills and played a crucial role in the history of baseball.
Decline and Legacy
The Eastern Colored League faced financial difficulties and internal disputes, which led to its eventual collapse in 1928. Despite its relatively short existence, the ECL played a significant role in the development of Negro league baseball and helped pave the way for the integration of Major League Baseball.
The legacy of the Eastern Colored League is remembered for its contribution to the rich history of African American baseball and its impact on the sport as a whole.
