Earle Page

Earle Page (8 August 1880 – 20 December 1961) was an Australian politician who served as the 11th Prime Minister of Australia. He was a founding member of the Country Party of Australia and held the position of Leader of the Country Party from 1921 to 1939. Page was also a prominent surgeon and academic.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Earle Christmas Grafton Page was born in Grafton, New South Wales. He was educated at Sydney Boys High School and later attended the University of Sydney, where he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1901. After completing his studies, Page worked as a surgeon in Sydney and Grafton.
Political Career[edit]
Page entered politics in 1919 when he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the member for Cowper. He quickly rose to prominence within the Country Party of Australia, becoming its leader in 1921. Page was a strong advocate for rural interests and played a key role in the formation of the Coalition between the Country Party and the Nationalist Party of Australia.
Prime Minister of Australia[edit]
Page served as Prime Minister of Australia for a brief period from 7 April 1939 to 26 April 1939, following the death of Joseph Lyons. His tenure was short-lived, as he was succeeded by Robert Menzies.
Later Political Career[edit]
After his brief stint as Prime Minister, Page continued to serve in various ministerial roles, including Minister for Commerce and Minister for Health. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and the Australian Broadcasting Commission.
Contributions to Medicine[edit]
In addition to his political career, Page made significant contributions to the field of medicine. He was a pioneer in the development of rural health services in Australia and was involved in the establishment of several medical institutions.
Personal Life[edit]
Earle Page married Ethel Blunt in 1906, and the couple had five children. He was known for his dedication to both his political and medical careers, balancing his time between the two fields.
Legacy[edit]
Earle Page is remembered as a key figure in the development of the Country Party of Australia and for his contributions to rural health services. The Earle Page College at the University of New England is named in his honor.
