E-health

E-health (pronounced /ˈiːˌhɛlθ/) is a relatively recent term for healthcare practice supported by electronic processes and communication, dating back to at least 1999. The term is derived from the combination of "electronic" and "healthcare", indicating its application in the digital age.

Definition

E-health encompasses a range of services or systems that are at the edge of medicine/healthcare and information technology. This includes Electronic Health Records (EHRs), Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), telemedicine, big data, and health informatics among others.

History

The concept of e-health has been around since the inception of the internet, but it was not until the late 1990s that the term was coined. The evolution of e-health has been influenced by the rapid development of new technologies and the increasing demand for remote and self-care.

Applications

E-health applications are numerous and include telehealth, mHealth, Health IT, wearable devices, remote patient monitoring, and virtual healthcare. These applications are designed to improve patient care, enhance medical research, and streamline administrative tasks in healthcare.

Benefits

E-health offers several benefits such as improved access to healthcare, cost efficiency, improved quality of care, and patient empowerment. It also provides healthcare professionals with a more efficient way to manage patient information and communicate with patients and other healthcare providers.

Challenges

Despite its benefits, e-health also presents several challenges including privacy and security concerns, lack of interoperability, and the digital divide. These challenges need to be addressed to fully realize the potential of e-health.
