Duodenal Switch

The Duodenal Switch (pronunciation: doo-oh-dee-nal switch) is a weight loss surgery that combines restrictive and malabsorptive aspects to achieve substantial long-term weight loss. The term is derived from the Latin duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) and the English switch (to change or exchange).

Procedure

The Duodenal Switch procedure involves two separate surgeries. The first is a sleeve gastrectomy, where a large portion of the stomach is removed to restrict food intake. The second is a Biliopancreatic Diversion with a duodenal switch, where a portion of the small intestine is bypassed to limit calorie absorption.

Benefits

The Duodenal Switch procedure has been shown to result in significant weight loss, improved quality of life, and the resolution of obesity-related comorbidities such as Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and Sleep Apnea.

Risks

Like all surgical procedures, the Duodenal Switch carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, and complications from anesthesia. Long-term risks include malnutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and bowel obstruction.
