Downingtown is a borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located 33 miles west of Philadelphia.
History[edit]
Downingtown has a rich history dating back to the early 18th century. Originally known as "Milltown" due to the number of mills along the East Branch Brandywine Creek, the area was later renamed after Thomas Downing, a prominent Quaker businessman.
The borough was officially incorporated in 1859. During the American Revolutionary War, the area was used as a supply depot for the Continental Army.
Geography[edit]
Downingtown is situated in the Piedmont region of Pennsylvania. The borough covers a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of which is land. The East Branch Brandywine Creek runs through the center of the borough.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, Downingtown had a population of 7,898. The borough is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Education[edit]
Downingtown is served by the Downingtown Area School District. The district includes several elementary, middle, and high schools, including Downingtown High School East Campus and Downingtown High School West Campus.
Transportation[edit]
Downingtown is accessible via the U.S. Route 30 and Pennsylvania Route 113. The borough is also served by the Downingtown station on the Amtrak Keystone Service line.

The economy of Downingtown is diverse, with a mix of local businesses and larger corporations. The borough has seen growth in recent years due to its proximity to Philadelphia and the development of new residential and commercial areas.
