Dominant (/dɒmɪnənt/; from Latin dominant, "ruling, governing") is a term used in various fields of study, including genetics, music, and linguistics. In each of these fields, it carries a slightly different meaning, but generally refers to something that exerts power or influence over others.

Genetics

In genetics, a dominant trait or gene is one that is expressed in an organism's phenotype, masking the effect of the recessive allele or gene when present. Dominant genes are denoted by a capital letter (e.g., A).
