Domestic Muscovy duck
Domestic Muscovy Duck[edit]
The domestic Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata domestica) is a domesticated form of the wild Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata), native to the Americas. It is a large duck, with males typically larger than females, and is known for its distinctive appearance and utility in agriculture.

Description[edit]
Domestic Muscovy ducks are notable for their unique appearance, which includes a prominent caruncle, or fleshy growth, around the face. They have a long body and a broad tail. The plumage can vary widely, with common colors including white, black, and a mix of both. The males are generally larger, weighing between 4.5 to 6.8 kg (10 to 15 lbs), while females are smaller, weighing around 2.3 to 3.6 kg (5 to 8 lbs).

Behavior[edit]
Muscovy ducks are known for their quiet demeanor, as they do not quack like other ducks. Instead, they communicate through hissing and cooing sounds. They are excellent foragers and are often used in pest control due to their diet, which includes insects and small vertebrates.
Reproduction[edit]
The breeding habits of domestic Muscovy ducks are similar to their wild counterparts. They are prolific breeders, with females laying clutches of 8 to 16 eggs. The incubation period lasts about 35 days, and the ducklings are precocial, meaning they are relatively mature and mobile from the moment of hatching.

Uses[edit]
Domestic Muscovy ducks are valued for their meat, which is leaner and has a stronger flavor compared to other domestic ducks. They are also kept for their eggs and as ornamental birds due to their striking appearance.
Habitat and Distribution[edit]
Originally from Central and South America, domestic Muscovy ducks have been introduced to various parts of the world, including North America, Europe, and Asia. They adapt well to different environments, thriving in both rural and urban settings.

Health and Care[edit]
Muscovy ducks are hardy birds but require proper care to thrive. They need access to clean water for swimming and a balanced diet to maintain their health. Regular health checks are recommended to prevent common avian diseases.
