Dogfish Head Brewery is a brewing company based in Milton, Delaware. It was founded by Sam Calagione in 1995. The brewery is known for its innovative and experimental approach to brewing, often incorporating non-traditional ingredients and techniques.

History

Dogfish Head Brewery was established in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in 1995. The brewery initially operated as a brewpub, producing small batches of beer for on-site consumption. In 2002, the company expanded its operations to a larger facility in Milton, Delaware to meet growing demand.

Products

Dogfish Head Brewery produces a wide range of beers, including IPAs, stouts, porters, and sour beers. Some of their most popular offerings include:

  • 60 Minute IPA: A continuously hopped India Pale Ale.
  • 90 Minute IPA: A stronger version of the 60 Minute IPA, also continuously hopped.
  • 120 Minute IPA: An even more potent IPA, known for its high ABV.
  • Palo Santo Marron: A brown ale aged in Palo Santo wood tanks.
  • SeaQuench Ale: A session sour brewed with lime juice, lime peel, black limes, and sea salt.

Innovations

Dogfish Head Brewery is renowned for its innovative brewing techniques. The brewery was one of the first to use continuous hopping, a process where hops are added continuously throughout the boil, rather than in stages. This technique is used in their 60 Minute, 90 Minute, and 120 Minute IPAs.

The brewery also experiments with historical recipes and unusual ingredients. For example, their Midas Touch beer is based on a recipe derived from residues found in ancient Phrygian tombs, and their Ancient Ales series includes beers inspired by archaeological findings.

Facilities

The main brewing facility is located in Milton, Delaware, and includes a tasting room, a beer garden, and a distillery. The original brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware continues to operate, offering a full menu and a variety of Dogfish Head beers on tap.

Community Involvement

Dogfish Head Brewery is actively involved in the local community and supports various charitable organizations. The brewery hosts events such as the annual Dogfish Dash, a 5K/10K race that raises funds for the Delaware chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

Acquisition

In 2019, Dogfish Head Brewery was acquired by Boston Beer Company, the makers of Samuel Adams beer. The acquisition aimed to combine the strengths of both companies while maintaining the unique identity of Dogfish Head.
