The Discovery Institute (pronunciation: dis-kə-vər-ē in-stə-ˈtüt) is a non-profit public policy think tank based in Seattle, Washington, best known for its advocacy of intelligent design.

Etymology

The term "Discovery Institute" is derived from the English words "discovery" and "institute". "Discovery" originates from the late Middle English word "discoverie" which means the action or process of discovering or being discovered. "Institute" comes from the Latin word "institutum", meaning a facility or establishment with a particular purpose.

History

The Discovery Institute was founded in 1990 by Bruce Chapman and George Gilder. It is dedicated to the reinvigoration of traditional Western principles and institutions and the worldview from which they issued. The Institute's primary thrusts in public policy research are in national and international affairs, science and technology, and the role of economics and entrepreneurship in our society.

Intelligent Design

The Discovery Institute is known for its advocacy of intelligent design. Intelligent design is the assertion that "certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection."
