Discovery, Inc. was an American multinational mass media factual television conglomerate based in New York City. The company was established in 1985 and was best known for its flagship channel, Discovery Channel. Over the years, Discovery, Inc. expanded its portfolio to include a variety of other channels and media properties.
History
Discovery, Inc. was founded by John Hendricks in 1985. The company's first channel, Discovery Channel, launched on June 17, 1985, and focused on documentary programming about popular science, technology, and history.
In the 1990s, Discovery, Inc. began to diversify its offerings by launching new channels and acquiring existing ones. Some of the notable channels launched during this period include Animal Planet in 1996 and Discovery Kids in 1996.
Expansion and Acquisitions
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Discovery, Inc. continued to grow through a series of acquisitions and partnerships. In 2008, the company acquired HowStuffWorks, a digital media company that provided educational content. In 2018, Discovery, Inc. completed a significant merger with Scripps Networks Interactive, adding popular channels such as HGTV, Food Network, and Travel Channel to its portfolio.
