Discord
== Discord ==
Discord is a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), instant messaging, and digital distribution platform designed for creating communities. Users communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media, and files in private chats or as part of communities called "servers." Servers are a collection of persistent chat rooms and voice chat channels. Discord runs on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and in web browsers.
History
Discord was publicly released in May 2015 under the domain name discordapp.com. It was created by Jason Citron, who had previously founded OpenFeint, a social gaming platform for mobile games. Citron sold OpenFeint to GREE in 2011 for $104 million, which he used to fund his next project, Hammer & Chisel, a game development studio. The studio's first product was Fates Forever, released in 2014, which did not achieve commercial success. However, the need for better communication tools for gamers led to the development of Discord.
Features
Discord offers a variety of features for its users:
- Servers: Servers are the main communities on Discord, each containing multiple channels. They can be public or private and can be customized with roles and permissions.
- Channels: Within servers, channels can be text-based or voice-based. Text channels allow for text communication, while voice channels allow for voice and video communication.
- Direct Messages: Users can send direct messages to each other outside of servers.
- Screen Sharing: Users can share their screens with others in voice channels.
- Bots: Discord supports bots, which are automated programs that can perform various tasks within servers.
- Nitro: Discord Nitro is a subscription service that offers additional features such as higher quality video, larger upload limits, and custom Discord tags.
Usage
Discord is widely used by gamers, but its user base has expanded to include various communities such as education, business, and social groups. It is known for its ease of use, customization options, and robust feature set.
Security and Privacy
Discord has implemented various security measures to protect user data and privacy. These include two-factor authentication, IP location lock, and regular security audits. However, it has faced criticism for issues related to moderation and the spread of harmful content.
