Disaster Risk Reduction (pronunciation: /dɪˈzɑːstə rɪsk rɪˈdʌkʃən/) is a systematic approach to identifying, assessing and reducing the risks of disaster. It aims to reduce socio-economic vulnerabilities to disaster as well as dealing with the environmental and other hazards that trigger them.
Etymology
The term "Disaster Risk Reduction" is derived from the concept of Disaster, which comes from the Middle French désastre and that from Old Italian disastro, which in turn comes from the Ancient Greek pejorative prefix δυσ-, (dus-) "bad" and ἀστήρ (aster) "star". The term "Risk" comes from the early Italian risco (or rischio) which means "danger". The term "Reduction" comes from the Latin reductio, bringing back, from reducere, bring back: re- back + ducere lead.
