Derek Shepherd
Derek Christopher Shepherd, M.D., F.A.C.S., also referred to as "McDreamy," is a fictional character from the American television medical drama Grey's Anatomy, which airs on the ABC in the United States. The character was created by series' producer Shonda Rhimes, and is portrayed by actor Patrick Dempsey. Derek is introduced as a renowned neurosurgeon, former head of neurosurgery, and board director at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Character Background
Derek Shepherd was born in New York City and raised in Seattle, Washington. He attended Bowdoin College and later went to Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons for medical school. He completed his residency at New York Hospital.
Career
Derek is a highly skilled neurosurgeon and has performed numerous complex surgeries throughout the series. He initially worked at Seattle Grace Hospital, which later became Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Derek's expertise and innovative techniques in neurosurgery earned him a reputation as one of the best in his field.
Personal Life
Derek was married to Addison Montgomery, a neonatal surgeon, but their marriage ended due to infidelity. He later married Meredith Grey, a general surgeon, and they have three children together: Zola, Derek Bailey, and Ellis. Derek's sister, Amelia Shepherd, is also a neurosurgeon.
Death
Derek Shepherd's character was killed off in the eleventh season of Grey's Anatomy. He died from injuries sustained in a car accident after stopping to help victims of another accident.
Legacy
Derek Shepherd remains one of the most beloved characters in Grey's Anatomy. His relationship with Meredith Grey is considered one of the central storylines of the series. His death had a significant impact on the show's narrative and its characters.
