Dental cement

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Dental Cement is a type of adhesive substance used in dentistry for various purposes. It is often used to secure dental prosthetics, such as crowns, bridges, and orthodontic appliances, to the teeth. Dental cement can also be used as a temporary filling material.

Composition

Dental cement is typically composed of a powder and a liquid, which are mixed together to form a paste. The powder is usually made from zinc oxide, while the liquid is typically a phosphoric acid. When mixed together, they form a hard, durable material that can withstand the forces of chewing and biting.

Types

There are several types of dental cement, each with its own specific uses and properties. These include:

  • Zinc Phosphate Cement: This is one of the oldest types of dental cement. It is strong and durable, but it can be irritating to the pulp of the tooth.
  • Polycarboxylate Cement: This type of cement is less irritating to the pulp and is often used for cementing crowns and bridges.
  • Glass Ionomer Cement: This cement bonds directly to the tooth and releases fluoride, which can help to prevent tooth decay.
  • Resin Cement: This is a newer type of cement that is very strong and bonds directly to the tooth. It is often used for cementing dental veneers and other cosmetic restorations.

Uses

Dental cement is used in a variety of dental procedures, including:

  • Cementing crowns and bridges
  • Securing orthodontic appliances
  • Filling cavities temporarily
  • Protecting the pulp of the tooth

Risks

While dental cement is generally safe, there can be risks associated with its use. These can include allergic reactions, irritation to the pulp of the tooth, and failure of the cement to properly secure the dental prosthetic.
