Database Management System
Database Management System (pronunciation: /ˈdeɪtəˌbeɪs ˈmænɪdʒmənt ˈsɪstəm/) is a software system that enables users to define, create, maintain and control access to the database. The term "database management system" is believed to have first been used in the 1960s.
Etymology
The term "Database Management System" is composed of three words: "Database", "Management", and "System". The word "Database" is a combination of "data", which comes from the Latin word datum, meaning "something given", and "base", which originates from the Latin word basis, meaning "foundation". "Management" comes from the Latin word manus, meaning "hand", and agere, meaning "to lead". "System" comes from the Greek word systēma, meaning "whole compounded of several parts or members".
