Dartmouth College
Dartmouth College (/ˈdɑːrtməθ/ DART-məth) is a private Ivy League research university in Hanover, New Hampshire, United States. Established in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock, it is the ninth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.
Etymology
The college's name comes from William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth, an important supporter of Eleazar Wheelock's efforts at establishing the school. The Earl of Dartmouth was a title in the Peerage of Great Britain, named for the town of Dartmouth in Devon, England.
