Daphne Zepos

Daphne Zepos (1959 – 2012) was a renowned cheese educator, writer, and advocate. She was known for her passion for artisanal cheese and her significant contributions to the cheese industry.

Early Life and Education

Daphne Zepos was born in Athens, Greece in 1959. She moved to the United States in the 1980s to study English Literature at Boston University.

Career

After her studies, Zepos began her career in the food industry. She worked at several notable establishments, including Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Artisanal Premium Cheese Center in New York City.

In 2006, Zepos co-founded the Essex Street Cheese Company, which is known for importing hand-selected wheels of Comté cheese and Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Zepos was also a gifted educator and writer. She taught at the Cheese School of San Francisco and wrote for various publications, including Culture: the word on cheese. Her writing and teaching often focused on the history, production, and appreciation of artisanal cheese.

Legacy

Zepos passed away in 2012. In her honor, the Daphne Zepos Teaching Award was established. This annual grant supports cheese professionals who wish to travel, learn, and further their understanding of traditional cheese-making practices.
