cytokeratin - (pronounced) (SY-toh-KAYR-uh-tin) type of protein found on epithelial cells that line the inside and outside surfaces of the body. Cytokeratins help form the tissues of hair, nails, and the outer layer of skin. They are also found on cells in the lining of organs, glands, and other parts of the body. Certain cytokeratins can be found at higher than normal levels in patients with various types of epithelial cell cancer, including lung, breast, colon, bladder, and head and neck cancer. Measuring the amount of certain cytokeratins in the blood can help plan cancer treatment or find out how well the treatment is working or if the cancer has come back. A cytokeratin is a type of tumor marker. Also called keratin
