Cynthia Maung
Cynthia Maung (pronunciation: Sin-thi-a Maung) is a renowned Burmese medical doctor and human rights activist. She is the founder of the Mae Tao Clinic, a health center providing free healthcare to refugees, migrant workers, and other individuals who lack access to medical services.
Etymology
The name Cynthia is of Greek origin, derived from the name of the Greek moon goddess, Artemis, known as "Kynthia" because she was born on Mount Cynthus. Maung is a common surname in Burma (Myanmar), meaning 'bear' in the Burmese language.
Early Life and Education
Cynthia Maung was born in 1959 in Burma. She graduated from the Institute of Medicine, Rangoon in 1985. After the 1988 uprising in Burma, she fled to Thailand where she established the Mae Tao Clinic.
Mae Tao Clinic
The Mae Tao Clinic was established in 1989 in response to the lack of healthcare services available to refugees fleeing Burma. The clinic provides a range of healthcare services including medical consultations, maternal and child health care, and disease prevention. It also offers training for healthcare workers.
Awards and Recognition
Cynthia Maung has received numerous awards for her work, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 2002, the Sydney Peace Prize in 2013, and the Sergio Vieira de Mello Human Rights Award in 2013.
