Cyclopoida

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Cyclopoida is an order of small crustaceans belonging to the subclass Copepoda. These organisms are predominantly aquatic and are found in a variety of freshwater and marine environments. Cyclopoids are characterized by their short, robust bodies and a distinctive first pair of antennae that are shorter than those of other copepods.

Morphology

Cyclopoids typically have a cylindrical body with a segmented thorax and abdomen. The thorax is composed of six segments, each bearing a pair of swimming legs. The abdomen is narrower and usually consists of five segments. The first pair of antennae, known as the antennules, are uniramous and shorter than the body, which distinguishes them from other copepod orders such as Calanoida. The second pair of antennae is biramous and used for swimming.

Ecology

Cyclopoids are highly adaptable and can be found in a wide range of habitats, from freshwater lakes and rivers to marine environments. They play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems as both predators and prey. Cyclopoids feed on a variety of food sources, including phytoplankton, zooplankton, and detritus. Some species are parasitic, living on fish or other aquatic organisms.

Reproduction

Cyclopoids exhibit sexual reproduction, with distinct male and female individuals. Females carry their eggs in external sacs attached to their bodies until they hatch. The development of cyclopoids includes several naupliar and copepodid stages before reaching adulthood.

Importance

Cyclopoids are important indicators of water quality and are used in ecological studies to assess the health of aquatic environments. They are also a key component of the food web, serving as prey for fish and other aquatic animals.

Taxonomy

The order Cyclopoida is divided into several families, including:
