Cyclical
Cyclical refers to events or processes that occur in cycles or with a periodicity. The term is widely used in various fields such as economics, biology, geology, and astronomy to describe phenomena that exhibit a repeating pattern over time.
Economics
In economics, the term cyclical is used to describe the ups and downs of the economy. The business cycle, also known as the economic cycle, refers to the fluctuations in economic activity that an economy experiences over a period of time. It consists of periods of economic expansions and contractions (recessions) in the level of economic activities (business fluctuations) around its long-term growth trend. These fluctuations occur around a long-term growth trend, and typically involve shifts over time between periods of relatively rapid economic growth (expansions or booms), and periods of relative stagnation or decline (contractions or recessions).
Biology
In biology, cyclical processes are fundamental to life. The cell cycle, for instance, is the series of events that take place in a cell leading to its division and duplication. Other biological cycles include the circadian rhythm, which is a roughly 24-hour cycle in the physiological processes of living beings, and the menstrual cycle in females.
Geology
In geology, cyclical processes such as the rock cycle and the water cycle play a crucial role. The rock cycle is a basic concept in geology that describes the time-consuming transitions through geologic time among the three main rock types: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth.
Astronomy
In astronomy, cyclical phenomena are abundant. The lunar cycle, for instance, refers to the moon's constant orbit around the earth. The solar cycle, on the other hand, is the cycle that the Sun’s magnetic field goes through approximately every 11 years.
