Cybersecurity (pronounced: /ˌsʌɪbər sɪˈkjʊərɪti/), also known as information technology security or electronic information security, refers to the practice of protecting computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from digital attacks, damage, or unauthorized access. The term is derived from the combination of the words "cybernetic" and "security".

Etymology

The term cybersecurity is a compound word that originated in the late 20th century. It combines "cyber-", a prefix derived from "cybernetic" which comes from the Greek word "kybernetes" meaning "steersman" or "governor", and "security", which originates from the Latin word "securitas", referring to the state of being free from danger or threat.
