Cure Violence
Cure Violence
Cure Violence (pronounced: /kyo͝or ˈvīələns/) is a public health approach to violence prevention that treats violence as a contagious disease. It was developed in the late 1990s by Gary Slutkin, an epidemiologist and a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Etymology
The term "Cure Violence" is derived from the organization's mission to "cure" or end violence by stopping the spread of violent behavior. The word "cure" comes from the Latin cura, meaning "care", and "violence" originates from the Latin violentia, meaning "vehemence, impetuosity".
Approach
Cure Violence uses a three-pronged approach to stop the spread of violence:
- Interrupting transmission of violent behavior
- Identifying and changing the thinking of highest potential transmitters
- Changing social norms
The approach is based on methods used in disease control, identifying potential instances of violence and intervening before they can occur. This is done through the use of Violence Interrupters, individuals from the community who have been trained to anticipate where violence may occur and intervene before it does.
