Crawford County is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,631. Its county seat and largest city is Prairie du Chien.
History
Crawford County was created in 1818 as part of the Michigan Territory. It was named after William H. Crawford, who was the United States Secretary of War at the time. The county was one of the original counties of the Wisconsin Territory when it was established in 1836.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 599 square miles (1,550 km²), of which 571 square miles (1,480 km²) is land and 28 square miles (73 km²) (4.7%) is water. The county is bordered by the Mississippi River to the west.

Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 16,631 people, 7,200 households, and 4,500 families residing in the county. The population density was 29.1 people per square mile (11.2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of other racial and ethnic groups.

Government
Crawford County is governed by a board of supervisors, with each member representing a district within the county. The board is responsible for setting policy and overseeing the administration of county services.
Education
The county is served by several school districts, including the Prairie du Chien Area School District, North Crawford School District, and Seneca Area School District.
Transportation
Major highways in the county include U.S. Route 18, U.S. Route 61, and Wisconsin Highway 27. The county is also served by the Prairie du Chien Municipal Airport.
