Cornish (/'kɔːrnɪʃ/; Cornish: Kernowek or Kernewek) is a Celtic language native to Cornwall in the United Kingdom. It is a member of the Brittonic branch of the Insular Celtic languages, which also includes Welsh and Breton.

Etymology

The term Cornish comes from the Old English word Cornwealas, meaning "people of Cornwall". The language itself is known as Kernowek or Kernewek in Cornish, derived from Kernow, the Cornish name for Cornwall.

Pronunciation

In IPA, Cornish is pronounced as /'kɔːrnɪʃ/. The r is rolled, and the sh is pronounced as in ship.
