Convexity
Convexity (medicine)
Convexity (pronounced: /kɒnˈvɛksɪti/) is a term used in various fields of medicine to describe a structure or part of the body that is curved or rounded outward. The term is derived from the Latin word "convexus", which means "curved or rounded outward".
Anatomy
In anatomy, convexity refers to the outward curve of a structure or part of the body. For example, the skull has a convexity, as does the spine when viewed from the side. The opposite of convexity in anatomical terms is concavity, which refers to an inward curve.
Radiology
In radiology, convexity is used to describe the shape of an organ or structure in an imaging study. For example, a lung or kidney may have a convexity that is visible in an X-ray or CT scan.
Neurology
In neurology, the term convexity is often used to refer to the rounded outer surface of the brain, also known as the cerebral convexity. Conditions such as convexity meningioma or convexity subdural hematoma refer to pathologies located in this area.
