Continuing Professional Development
Continuing Professional Development (pronunciation: /kənˈtɪn.juː.ɪŋ prəˈfɛʃ.ən.əl dɪˈvɛl.əp.mənt/), often abbreviated as CPD, is a term used to describe the learning activities professionals engage in to develop and enhance their abilities. The term is generally used to mean a physical folder or portfolio documenting an individual's development as a professional.
Etymology
The term "Continuing Professional Development" is of English origin. The word "continuing" is derived from the Old French continuer, which means "to carry on", "professional" comes from the Latin professio, meaning "public declaration", and "development" is derived from the Old French desveloper, meaning "to unwrap" or "expose".
