Community Service

Community service (/kəˈmjuːnɪti ˈsɜːrvɪs/) is a non-paying job performed by an individual or a group of individuals for the benefit of their community or its institutions.

Etymology

The term "community service" originates from the English words "community" and "service". "Community" comes from the Old French communite which is derived from the Latin communitas (com, "with/together" + munus, "gift"), a broad term for fellowship or organized society. "Service" comes from the Old English sērvice or sērvitū, which means the "condition of being a slave, servitude, a slave's duties, work or business".

Definition

Community service is often organized through a local group, such as a place of worship, school, or non-profit organization, or you can start your own community service projects. Community service can even involve raising funds by donating used goods or selling used good like clothing.
