Community boards of Queens

Community Boards of Queens are local government bodies in the borough of Queens, one of the five boroughs of New York City. They play a crucial role in improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers residing in their community district.

Overview

Community Boards have an important advisory role in dealing with land use and zoning matters, the city budget, municipal service delivery, and many other matters relating to their communities' welfare. There are 14 Community Boards in Queens, each responsible for a specific geographic area.

Functions

Community Boards have a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

• Reviewing and making recommendations on the City's budget
• Assessing the needs of their own neighborhoods
• Addressing community concerns and complaints
• Planning and reviewing land use applications
• Monitoring the delivery of city services

Structure

Each Community Board has up to 50 volunteer members appointed by the Queens Borough President, half from nominations by City Council Members representing the community district. Board members are selected from among active, involved people of each community, with an effort made to assure that every neighborhood is represented.
