Clothes (pronounced: /kloʊðz/) are items worn on the body, typically made from fabrics such as cotton, silk, or polyester. The wearing of clothing is mostly restricted to human beings and is a feature of all human societies. The amount and type of clothing worn depends on gender, body type, social, and geographic considerations.

Etymology

The word clothes derives from the Old English 'clāþas', which means cloth or clothing. It is related to the Old Norse 'klæði', the Danish 'klæder', and the German 'Kleid', all of which mean clothes.

Types of Clothes

There are many different types of clothes, including:

  • Shirt: A garment for the upper body made of any variety of fabrics and styles.
  • Pants: A piece of clothing worn from the waist to the ankles, covering both legs separately.
  • Dress: A garment for women and girls that consists of a skirt with an attached bodice.
  • Suit: A set of garments made from the same cloth, usually consisting of at least a jacket and trousers.
  • Skirt: A garment that hangs from the waist and covers all or part of the legs.
