Clemson University
Clemson University is a public research university located in Clemson, South Carolina. Established in 1889, the university is named after its founder, Thomas Green Clemson, who willed his estate to create the institution with the aim of fostering education in the sciences, agriculture, and engineering. Clemson University has grown from its humble beginnings to become a premier higher education and research institution recognized nationally and internationally.
History
The history of Clemson University is deeply intertwined with the life and vision of Thomas Green Clemson. Born in 1807, Clemson was an engineer, diplomat, and agriculturist who envisioned a high-caliber educational institution in South Carolina. Upon his death in 1888, Clemson bequeathed his estate for the establishment of a scientific institution, leading to the founding of Clemson Agricultural College in 1889. Initially an all-male military school, it transitioned to a coeducational, civilian institution in 1955 and was renamed Clemson University in 1964 to reflect its expanding academic offerings and research initiatives.

Clemson University's main campus spans over 1,400 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, near Lake Hartwell.
