Cindy Crawford
American model and actress
Cynthia Ann Crawford (born February 20, 1966) is an American model, actress, and television personality. Her years of success at modeling made her an international celebrity that has led to roles in television and film, and to work as a spokesperson.
Early life
Crawford was born in DeKalb, Illinois, on February 20, 1966. She is the daughter of Jennifer Sue Crawford-Moluf and John Daniel Crawford. She has two sisters, Chris and Danielle, and a brother, Jeffery, who died of leukemia at age 3. Crawford graduated from DeKalb High School in 1984 as valedictorian. She briefly attended Northwestern University on an academic scholarship to study chemical engineering, but dropped out to pursue a full-time modeling career.
Career
Crawford's modeling career began when she was 16 years old, after a local photographer took a picture of her working in the fields during a summer job. The photo and positive feedback she received were enough to convince her to take up modeling. She entered the Elite Model Management's Look of the Year contest at 17 and was a runner-up. Elite Model Management in Chicago then started representing her.
Modeling
Crawford has appeared on hundreds of magazine covers throughout her career, including Vogue, W, People, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, and Allure. She has also worked with many of the world's top designers and photographers, including Gianni Versace, Karl Lagerfeld, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, and Richard Avedon.
Acting
Crawford has also ventured into acting, appearing in films such as Fair Game and The Simian Line. She has made guest appearances on various television shows, including 3rd Rock from the Sun and According to Jim.
Business Ventures
In addition to modeling and acting, Crawford has launched several business ventures. She has her own line of beauty products, Meaningful Beauty, and a line of furniture under the Cindy Crawford Home Collection. She has also released several exercise videos.
Personal life
Crawford was married to actor Richard Gere from 1991 to 1995. She married businessman Rande Gerber in 1998, and they have two children, Presley Gerber and Kaia Gerber, both of whom have followed in their mother's footsteps and pursued modeling careers.
Philanthropy
Crawford is actively involved in various charitable causes. She is a supporter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, inspired by the death of her brother. She has also been involved with the Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Starlight Children's Foundation.
