The Chicago Medical Society (pronunciation: /ʃɪˈkɑːɡoʊ ˈmɛdɪkəl səˈsaɪəti/) is a professional organization of physicians, located in Chicago, Illinois. The society was established in 1850, making it one of the oldest medical societies in the United States.

Etymology

The term "Chicago Medical Society" is a combination of the city's name, "Chicago", and the term "Medical Society". The word "Chicago" is derived from a French rendering of the indigenous Miami-Illinois word shikaakwa for a wild relative of the onion, known to botanists as Allium tricoccum. The term "Medical Society" is a common term used to describe a professional association of physicians.
