Chemometrics

Chemometrics (pronunciation: /kɛmoʊˈmɛtrɪks/) is a branch of chemistry that uses mathematical and statistical methods to design or select optimal procedures and experiments and to provide maximum chemical information by analyzing chemical data.

Etymology

The term "Chemometrics" is a portmanteau of the words "Chemistry" and "Metrics", indicating the use of mathematical or statistical methods in the analysis and understanding of chemical data.

Definition

Chemometrics is the science of extracting information from chemical systems by data-driven means. It is a highly interfacial discipline, using methods frequently employed in core data-analytic disciplines such as multivariate statistics, applied mathematics, and computer science, in order to address chemical problems.

Related Terms

  • Multivariate analysis: A set of techniques used for analysis of data that contain more than one variable, and the techniques are especially valuable when working with correlated variables.
  • Chemical data: Information derived from scientific experiments that pertain to the structure or composition of compounds or materials.
  • Chemical information: The information content in terms of chemical facts, such as the properties, structure, and behavior of chemical substances.
  • Chemical systems: A set of interacting substances that are involved in a set of chemical reactions.
  • Applied mathematics: The application of mathematical methods by different fields such as science, engineering, business, computer science, and industry.
  • Computer science: The study of algorithmic processes, computational machines and computation itself.
