Chase & Sanborn Coffee Company was an American coffee company established in 1862. It was one of the first coffee companies to pack and ship roasted coffee in sealed tins, which helped to preserve the freshness of the coffee. The company was founded by Caleb Chase and James Solomon Sanborn in Boston, Massachusetts.

History

The company was founded during the American Civil War, a period that saw significant changes in American industry and commerce. Chase & Sanborn quickly became known for its innovative packaging methods. By sealing roasted coffee in tins, the company was able to offer a product that stayed fresh longer than other brands, which were typically sold in bulk and exposed to air.

Products

Chase & Sanborn offered a variety of coffee products, including ground coffee and whole beans. The company was particularly known for its "Seal Brand" coffee, which was marketed as a premium product. Over the years, the company expanded its product line to include different blends and roasts to cater to varying consumer preferences.

Advertising

Chase & Sanborn was also known for its innovative advertising campaigns. In the early 20th century, the company sponsored a popular radio program, the Chase and Sanborn Hour, which featured famous entertainers of the time. This sponsorship helped to increase the brand's visibility and popularity.

Acquisitions and Mergers

In the mid-20th century, Chase & Sanborn underwent several changes in ownership. The company was acquired by Standard Brands in 1929, which later merged with Nabisco in 1981. Eventually, the brand became part of the Kraft Foods portfolio.

Legacy

Although Chase & Sanborn is no longer a standalone company, its legacy lives on through its contributions to the coffee industry. The company's pioneering efforts in packaging and marketing set standards that are still followed today.
