Charles G. Dawes
Charles Gates Dawes (August 27, 1865 – April 23, 1951) was an American banker, military general, diplomat, and politician who served as the 30th Vice President of the United States from 1925 to 1929. He was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 for his work on the Dawes Plan for World War I reparations.
Early Life and Education
Dawes was born in Marietta, Ohio, to a prominent family. He graduated from Marietta College in 1884 and later studied law at the Cincinnati Law School, earning his degree in 1886.
Career
Banking and Business
Dawes began his career in banking and quickly rose to prominence in the field. He was involved in various business ventures and became a successful banker.
Military Service
During World War I, Dawes served as a brigadier general in the United States Army. He was responsible for managing military supplies and logistics, which earned him recognition for his organizational skills.
Political Career
Dawes entered politics and served as the Comptroller of the Currency from 1898 to 1901. He was later appointed as the first director of the Bureau of the Budget by President Warren G. Harding.
In 1924, Dawes was elected as the Vice President of the United States under President Calvin Coolidge. During his tenure, he was known for his outspoken nature and efforts to reform the Senate's rules.
Nobel Peace Prize
Dawes was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925, along with Sir Austen Chamberlain, for his work on the Dawes Plan, which aimed to ease the financial burden of Germany's reparations following World War I.
Personal Life
Dawes married Caro Blymyer in 1889, and they had several children. He was also a talented musician and composer, known for his composition "Melody in A Major".
Death and Legacy
Charles G. Dawes passed away on April 23, 1951, in Evanston, Illinois. He is remembered for his contributions to both domestic and international affairs, as well as his impact on American politics and finance.
